I wanted to use a smaller "test" group before trying this with a class of 35 eighth graders, so I tried it with our resource reading classes first. These classes are designed for struggling readers and generally have fewer than ten students. I had the best results with the eighth grade class, who better understood all my dating jokes ("sometimes you have to kiss some frogs", "sometimes you have to throw that fish back in", "if at first you don't succeed", etc.).
I've been following Jon Acuff since the Stuff Christian's Like started a while while back, and I've been wanting to read one of his books but haven't had the opportunity to read one of his books yet.I work with Christian college students who are in the throes of dating or of wanting to be dating.Nearly every week during the school year, I am asked questions (mostly by ladies) about the ins-and-outs of the dating process. As an ambitious journalist, he also can’t resist the Pulitzer worthy scoop she offers him. However, as Lanie sheds more layers, both emotionally and physically, Kyle begins to examine his life choices, and his true feelings for this enigmatic girl.Questions like, "What's the biblical model for dating? " and, "Do you believe there is one person out there for me? Yet when it comes to directing them to resources about relationships, often I'm uncomfortable recommending many of the Christian resources available.
While no doubt the purveyors of these resources mean well, I find that many of the resources lack significant social and theological acuity. We went over the directions thoroughly, and I made absolutely certain everyone knew what to do. Students who got a heart or a diamond (red card) get a "kiss" at the end of their date (Hershey's kiss). Many of the books got checked out, and the students were really engaged and enjoyed it.Students with a spade or club (black card) get a "sour face" at the end of their book date (a warhead candy). Next time, we'll get to squeeze in more rotations since I won't have to take time explaining how it works.Rules and regulations (mostly geared toward women) like, "Do not call or text him," "Never ask a guy out, let him pursue you, let him initiate," "Do not pray together," and "Only go on group dates" are often touted as inviolable and sacrosanct, as if they are dating principles derivable straight ... I've wanted to try it out for awhile now, and I finally went for it last week.Throughout the book, Acuff features inspiring and funny true stories—not merely his own, but those of friends who restarted their careers after a layoff, an extended maternity leave, or simply the realization that they were suffering fifty weeks a year just to pay the bills and enjoy two weeks of vacation.
